Frequently asked questions about Grand Canyon Hummer tours

How far in advance should I book a Grand Canyon Hummer tour?

We recommend booking at least 1–2 weeks in advance, especially during peak travel seasons (spring, summer, and holidays) to ensure availability and secure your preferred time slot.

What should I wear for a Grand Canyon Hummer tour?

Wear comfortable clothing suitable for the weather, along with closed-toe shoes. It’s also a good idea to bring a hat, sunglasses, and a light jacket for cooler temperatures in the evening.

Are the Hummer tours suitable for seniors or those with limited mobility?

Absolutely. Hummer tours are designed for ease and comfort, and most are wheelchair-accessible. If you have specific mobility needs, notify the tour operator in advance for assistance.

Can I bring food or drinks on the tour?

You can carry reusable water bottles on your Hummer tour, but outside food and alcoholic beverages are not allowed.

Will the Hummer tours run in bad weather?

Tours usually operate rain or shine, but in cases of extreme weather (like heavy snow or lightning), the tour may be rescheduled or canceled for safety. You will be notified in advance if changes occur.

How long do the Hummer tours typically last?

Standard Hummer tours at the South Rim last about 2 hours. If you book a combined tour with a helicopter or airplane, your total experience may extend to 3–5 hours. Upgrades with the Hummer tour may also include a rim trail hike and rafting experience, which could increase the tour duration to 4 to 5 hours.

Are restroom breaks provided during the tour?

Yes, most tours include planned stops where restroom facilities are available. It’s still a good idea to use the restroom before departure.

What an amazing trip this was. Our guide Gia was sooooo knowledgeable and such good fun. The Canyon itself was simply WOW. We did the sky walk and decided to add the helicopter and boat to our day and I can honestly say it was worth every penny. We will absolutely be back to Vegas and will use this company again.

It was incredible, we did the VIP tour to go underground along with up top. We were on a tour bus group, could have used at least another 1/2 hour there. But overall loved it. We have been to Vegas several times and this is the first time we've done the Dam tour. A must do.

We are a family of five (children aged 9, 13, 14) and enjoyed the helicopter tour into the Grand Canyon very much. The team at Papillon was very professional and nice and eveything worked perfectly. Big shout out to our pilot Brian for making this such a memorable experience!

Let me start by saying I have a serious fear of heights. However, I’ve never been bothered on planes where I’m completely enclosed. The night before my flight (my first helicopter ride), we stayed at the Kachina Lodge in Grand Canyon National Park. I tried to stay about 6 feet away from the edge of the walkway as much as possible. When I got closer, my acrophobia kicked in. But in the helicopter, like on a plane, I felt fine. We had five passengers on our flight, and with a helicopter that seats eight, the pilot put my wife and me on the outside seats in the back row, while the other passengers sat in the front row with him, ensuring everyone had a window seat and a great view. The pilot was young but seemed very knowledgeable about the Grand Canyon. It was both an informative and enjoyable experience. For me, it was the highlight of our trip, which included visits to the Petrified Forest, Las Vegas, Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, and Arches National Park. The flight lasted about 40 to 45 minutes, and with check-in (and possibly souvenir shopping), expect to spend about twice that. I highly recommend it.

Best hour of my life-that’s how my daughter (not a little kid but a well-traveled professional) described it. While I get that her statement might be a bit exaggerated, I completely understand her feelings, even if I don’t share her newfound desire to buy a helicopter. The Grand Canyon is vast, stretching about 277 miles. Unless you spend weeks rafting on the Colorado River or embark on a lengthy hike, it’s nearly impossible to fully appreciate the grandeur and scale of this natural wonder from the ground. I usually prefer to enjoy landscapes at my own pace and don’t typically go for this kind of experience, but the Maverick tour from Tusayan left me breathless and was worth every penny (and it takes a lot of pennies to fly with Maverick). They utilize aircraft specifically designed for sightseeing, which means more windows, stadium seating, all seats facing forward, and less noise and vibration (though you’ll still need to wear the provided noise-canceling headphones). Other companies might not use these specialized helicopters. Since all companies follow the same route, your choice mainly depends on the type of aircraft they operate and the quality of the pilot. Our pilot was incredibly knowledgeable, mixing a lot of information with humor and making every effort to ensure a pleasant and relaxed experience for everyone. We had the good fortune of sitting in the front row, which definitely enhances the experience-you can request the front row, but ultimately, seating is determined by weight distribution. We opted for the longer 45-minute tour (which actually lasted closer to an hour); the price difference compared to shorter flights from Tusayan is minimal, and I see no reason why anyone would choose a shorter flight unless they’re afraid of heights, in which case they shouldn’t be on this trip. I won’t attempt to describe the sights you’ll see, as words can’t capture the otherworldly beauty of this place. It’s simple: if you’re going to the trouble of visiting the Grand Canyon and can afford the fare, take this flight! Cut costs elsewhere if you need to (you can eat anywhere) but don’t skip this flight! (I’ve regretted not taking a helicopter over the Na-pali coast on Kauai for 8 years-don’t make my mistake!) One downside: the staff at the terminal were unhelpful, bordering on rude. Our flight left 30 minutes early, and we were rushed aboard without being told until the last minute that you can’t bring much on board besides a camera and a water bottle, forcing us to make some last-minute changes. (Bring your camera instead of paying the outrageous fees for a video of your flight or a family photo.) Bottom line: Maverick isn’t great on the ground, but once you’re in the air, it’s a nearly transcendent experience.

The best part was our guide—she was super energetic and answered everyone’s questions. The canyon was like nothing I’d seen before. Bus was comfortable and lunch was fine. Not a fan of the early start time, but worth it.
