Enjoy sightseeing options for both the North Rim and the South Rim all year round

Aerial views with the choice between helicopter tours and airplane tours

Things to know before booking your Grand Canyon National Park tour
▪️Timings:
South Rim: Open year-round, though certain areas may close during winter due to snow or unsafe conditions.
North Rim: Open only during the summer season (mid-May to mid-October). Heavy snowfall makes this area inaccessible during the winter months.
▪️Location and access:
South Rim: Easily reached by car, tour buses from nearby cities, or the Grand Canyon Railway from Williams, AZ. Most visitors prefer driving unless they are joining a guided tour that includes transportation.
North Rim: Public transit options are limited. The Trans-Canyon Shuttle operates twice daily during the open season, linking the North and South Rims. The trip takes around 4.5 hours and requires advance booking ($120 per person one-way).
▪️Entrance fee: Your park pass is valid for 7 days from purchase: $20 per person, $35 per vehicle, or $30 per motorcycle. This includes entry to both the South Rim and (when open) the North Rim.
▪️Distance between the North Rim and South Rim:
Driving time from Las Vegas to either rim is roughly the same, about 4.5 hours without stops.
Traveling between the North and South Rims takes an additional 3.5 hours, making it impractical to visit both in a single day by car. Keep this in mind when planning your itinerary.
▪️Tours from Las Vegas: You can choose between airplane tours or bus tours from Las Vegas, both offering round-trip convenience and scenic viewing along the way; ideal for a stress-free journey and a full day of exploration.
▪️Aerial tour restrictions: All aerial tours have a 300 lbs (136 kg) passenger weight limit. Guests exceeding this limit must purchase an additional seat.
▪️Tours that include North Rim and South Rim sightseeing: Some aerial experiences fly over both rims, with optional add-ons like a Hummer tour on the ground. These are excellent options if you want sightseeing without the long travel times.
▪️North Rim restrictions: Tours departing from the South Rim are unaffected by winter closures since the South Rim stays open year-round. However, seasonal conditions, like strong winds, thunderstorms, or low visibility, may alter tour schedules.
▪️Accessibility:
South Rim: Suitable for all ages and fitness levels, offering paved trails, accessible shuttles, multiple viewpoints, and a wide range of lodging and dining options.
North Rim: Much more limited, with only one major paved viewpoint trail, a single Visitor Center, minimal supplies, and almost no cell service.
▪️Seasonal factors: July and August bring monsoon conditions that can cause thunderstorms and flash floods. These weather patterns may lead to delays, rescheduling, or cancellations of tours.

Frequently asked questions about Grand Canyon National Park tours
Yes, especially if you’re looking for a low-stress, all-inclusive day. Bus tours handle park entry, lunch, and viewpoints, and you can relax during the long drive. They’re ideal for first-timers who want a full Grand Canyon National Park experience without navigating desert highways, parking at the busy South Rim, or worrying about shuttle systems.
Your bus tour includes round-trip transportation in air-conditioned motorized buses, guided narration, entrance fees to the Grand Canyon National Park, and a boxed lunch for full-day tours.
Children will love hummer tours! They are adventurous and thrilling while showing you scenic areas and lesser-known viewpoints.
Airplane tours save six to seven hours of driving and offer aerial views of Hoover Dam, Lake Mead, and the Colorado Plateau on the way. They’re ideal for travelers with tight schedules who still want to reach the South Rim, where you can spend more time exploring viewpoints.
While on tour, you can see diverse wildlife that the Grand Canyon is home including deer, condors, and squirrels. While spotting mountain lions is rare, always observe animals from a safe distance.
On your South Rim tour, make sure to visit Mather Point for panoramic views, Yavapai Point for geological exhibits, and Bright Angel Lodge for its rustic charm and dining options.
Parking is available at the Visitor Center and other designated spots in Grand Canyon Village, but it can fill up quickly during peak seasons.
Flights from Las Vegas are longer flights (up to 3.5-4 hours round trip), and often include Hoover Dam and Lake Mead views. They generally only fly over the West Rim and not the South Rim. Helicopter tours that start from the South Rim are shorter, more scenic flights focused entirely on Grand Canyon National Park, covering both the North Rim and Dragon Corridor.
Yes, especially if you want curated, less crowded viewpoints. Hummer tours take you to viewpoints many visitors don’t know about or skip, and guides choose the best overlooks based on lighting, traffic, and weather. They’re excellent for sunset photography.
Flights may be delayed or grounded during high winds, thunderstorms, snow, or low visibility. Your operators keep safety as a priority, and if a tour is cancelled, you’re usually offered a reschedule or refund.
South Rim Hummer tour for varied rim angles and lesser-known spots, and South Rim airplane and helicopter tours for aerial photography.
If you’re visiting between March and October, arrive by 8/9am to avoid the peak parking crunch at Grand Canyon Village and the Visitor Center. After late morning, parking lots fill, and you may need to use overflow areas or wait for shuttle buses. Sunset hours are extremely busy, so arrive 1-2 hours before sunset if you want a rim-side spot.
Not realistically. The rims are over 4 hours apart, one way, via desert highways. Even with perfect planning, you’d spend most of the day driving. If you want to experience both, plan two days minimum and overnight somewhere in between (Page, Cameron, or Jacob Lake) or split the stay between the two rims.
A drive + shuttle-based tour of the main South Rim viewpoints takes 4-6 hours at a relaxed pace. If you want to hike a bit, visit museums, and enjoy a meal along the rim, plan at least a full day. Keep in mind that the shuttle loops can take time, and pulling over at multiple viewpoints adds up.
Not on the South Rim’s Hermit Road (March-November), which is shuttle-only. You can drive to Desert View viewpoints year-round. The North Rim allows more private-vehicle access, but some roads (like Point Sublime) require high-clearance vehicles due to rough terrain.
Absolutely. It’s a quieter, more spread-out area with excellent geology views, fewer crowds, and the historic Desert View Watchtower, which offers one of the best 360° views on the South Rim. Even a 1.5-2 hour detour gives you a very different perspective than the Village area.
Late fall (November) and early spring (March-April) are ideal. You can enjoy cooler temperatures, good visibility, and manageable visitor numbers. Winter is magical with potential snow on the South Rim, but some facilities reduce hours, and some trails become icy (carry traction devices).
Coverage is spotty to nonexistent, particularly once you leave Grand Canyon Village or drive the Desert View route. Download maps offline, carry printed shuttle schedules, and don’t depend on GPS beyond the main roads.
More reads
Grand Canyon National Park is open daily, but the North Rim is closed during the winter months.
South Rim Visitor Center hours: May 23 to Aug 31: 8am to 4pm Sep 1 to May 22: 8am to 5pm
North Rim Visitor Center hours: 8am to 5pm (mid-May to mid-October)
Please note: Grand Canyon operates on Arizona time, which does not observe daylight savings. Keep this in mind when planning your trip if you are traveling from a different state.
Visit the South Rim during spring (March to May) and fall (September to November) when the weather is mild with daytime temperatures ranging between 50°F and 70°F (10°C to 21°C).
Crowds are smaller in these months compared to the busy summer. These seasons offer comfortable hiking conditions, clear views, and a more relaxed experience.
You can visit the North Rim in the peak summer months (June to August), where the temperatures are cooler and the crowds are relatively more manageable.
The South Rim operates multiple shuttle routes equipped with accessible seating, making them suitable for visitors with mobility challenges.
Many South Rim viewpoints feature paved, mostly flat paths, allowing easy access with minimal walking.
At the North Rim, Bright Angel Point and Cape Royal Point offer the best accessibility, with partially to fully paved routes, but the terrain may not always be perfectly smooth.
Visitors with cardiac, respiratory, back, or similar medical concerns should avoid strenuous hikes or activities within Grand Canyon National Park.
Hummer tours, helicopter flights, and most aerial sightseeing tours are wheelchair accessible.
All aerial tours enforce weight limits; guests over 300 lbs (136 kg) are required to purchase an additional seat.
Hiking or camping at the North Rim should be attempted only by visitors with prior experience, especially on long or uneven trails.
All guests aged 18 and above must carry a valid government-issued photo ID.
Remain on designated trails and viewpoints. This protects both you and the fragile canyon environment.
Never feed, touch, or approach any wildlife.
Drones are not allowed anywhere within the boundaries of Grand Canyon National Park.
Camp only in designated campgrounds or permitted backcountry areas, and ensure you secure all required permits before venturing out.
Pets must stay leashed at all times and are only permitted in developed zones.
Pack out all trash, including food waste, to help preserve the park’s natural beauty.
Note that some helicopter tours may collect a temporary fuel surcharge at check-in due to fluctuating aviation fuel costs.
Dress in layers to adjust to changing canyon temperatures, and wear sturdy sneakers or hiking boots for comfort during long walks or tours.
If you plan on camping or hiking below the rim, apply for your backcountry permits well in advance. The campground spots and permits are limited and often sell out.
Carry plenty of water, snacks, and a physical or offline map, especially if you’ll be venturing onto trails below the rim where there is little to no cell service.
Protect yourself from the sun with sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat.
Set aside time to explore educational and cultural stops like the Yavapai Geology Museum, Hermit’s Rest, and other historic points of interest to deepen your understanding of the canyon’s geology and heritage.
If you're short on time, consider booking an aerial tour. These sightseeing flights provide sweeping, rapid views of the canyon and pair well with ground tours or other activities to maximize your visit.

My husband and I were in town for our 1 year anniversary ... we landed down by the river and had the champagne and it was the most beautiful scenery and sights we have seen.
We had the best pilot, I'm thinking it was Mitch . He was so knowledgeable and had a great personality and even had great music.
This was a really great tour and would highly recommend for a lifetime memory.

What an amazing trip this was. Our guide Gia was sooooo knowledgeable and such good fun. The Canyon itself was simply WOW. We did the sky walk and decided to add the helicopter and boat to our day and I can honestly say it was worth every penny.
We will absolutely be back to Vegas and will use this company again.
